چکیده

We introduce a novel variant of the well known d-dimensional bin (or vector) packing problem. Given a sequence of non-negative d-dimensional vectors, the goal is to pack these into as few bins as possible. In the classical problem the bin size vector is given and the sequence can be partitioned arbitrarily. We study a variation where the vectors have to be packed in the order in which they arrive. The bin size vector can be chosen once in the beginning, under the constraint that the coordinate-wise bounds sum up to at most a given total bin size. This setting arises from a special resource constrained scheduling problem. We prove that the problem isNP-hard and we propose LP based bicriteria ( 1 ε , 1 1−ε )and (1, 2)-approximation algorithms. Furthermore, we investigate properties of natural greedy algorithms, and present an easy to implement heuristic which is fast and performs well in practice. Experiments with the heuristic and an ILP formulation yield very promising results on real world data.

Sequential Optimality Conditions and Variational Inequalities

In recent years, sequential optimality conditions are frequently used for convergence of iterative methods to solve nonlinear constrained optimization problems. The sequential optimality conditions do not require any of the constraint qualications. In this paper, We present the necessary sequential complementary approximate Karush Kuhn Tucker (CAKKT) condition for a point to be a solution of a ...

Sequential and Parallel Algorithms for Mixed Packing and Covering

We describe sequential and parallel algorithms that approximately solve linear programs with no negative coefficients (a.k.a. mixed packing and covering problems). For explicitly given problems, our fastest sequential algorithm returns a solution satisfying all constraints within a 1 ± ǫ factor in O(md log(m)/ǫ) time, where m is the number of constraints and d is the maximum number of constrain...

Shapes for maximal coverage for two-dimensional random sequential adsorption.

The random sequential adsorption of various particle shapes is studied in order to determine the influence of particle anisotropy on the saturated random packing. For all tested particles there is an optimal level of anisotropy which maximizes the saturated packing fraction. It is found that a concave shape derived from a dimer of disks gives a packing fraction of 0.5833, which is comparable to...
